Dakota

Although some may know him as Otto or Pal, to us, he will always be Dakota. Dakota joined Elkdog Ranch not long after the arrival of the first horses. Originally, he was brought to a working ranch in western Colorado, located just north of here. However, his perceptive and loving owner soon realized that Dakota’s sensitive soul yearned for a different pace of life and a deeper connection with his human caretakers.

Concerned about what lay ahead for Dakota if he didn’t find a space to expand his skills and forge a stronger bond with humans, his owner generously offered him a place within our herd at Elkdog. When he first arrived, Dakota was timid and unsure of his purpose. However, since joining us, he has learned that his connection with humans goes beyond mere sustenance and work. It is about supporting one another and the entire herd.

Now, when you visit, Dakota eagerly approaches the gate, curious to see what you have to offer. Although he may still display a hint of shyness, he is steadily growing into a confident and well-rounded horse. Through his time here, he is learning the true meaning of human-horse connection and the importance of mutual support. Dakota has also been the inspiration for the “Horses as the Canvas to the Soul” project on the ranch.

Glenn and Harrison, our adorable Olde English Southdown Babydoll sheep, have been spreading joy and happiness ever since their arrival. At just 10 months old, they joined us after being raised by a wonderful family just south of Elkdog Ranch. Growing up alongside young children, they developed a warm and inquisitive nature that we just can’t get enough of.

As the first members of our sheep herd, we wanted to pay homage to our deep roots in the fashion industry. Our history dates back to selling tailored women’s clothing, where every suit was meticulously crafted to perfection. These two sheep embody the beauty and precision found in the world of wool patterns, so we gave them names that reflect that era of elegance and consideration.

One of their favorite pastimes is taking leisurely walks around the ranch with Clancy, our trusty companion. They also excel in their main job of keeping our lawns immaculately trimmed. However, we do have to keep an eye on their mischievous adventures, as they often find their way into the house just to say a friendly “hello.” To them, kitchen visits are nothing but normal since their first week here, they resided in the kitchen while we ensured the safety of our property and gradually introduced them to their new best friends, Poncho and Lefty.

If you want to win their hearts forever, simply bring them some alfalfa pellets. It’s impossible to resist smiling when you see these two charming souls. They are determined to capture not only your affection but also your alfalfa supply.

We couldn’t resist honoring her by naming the coop after her, especially considering the incredible job she’s done as a “bird dog.” Clancy has raised all the ducks from adorable hatchlings, including our esteemed leader, Alfie the Toulouse goose, who keeps the lovely ladies – Violet, Hazel, Margot, and Puddle – all in check.

If you’re looking to make friends with our coop crew, all you need is a bag of frozen peas and a few moments of relaxing by the duck pool. you’ll quickly find that these feathered friends are your new friends for life.

Their story began at a Texas auction in December 2022, where their undeniable bond (and their incredible spots) caught everyone’s attention. We suspect they might even be brothers. However, at auctions, bonded pairs are typically separated and sent off in different directions. It was clear that Poncho and Lefty couldn’t bear to be apart.

Thankfully, the compassionate team at All Seated in a Barn stepped in and took action. They knew that these two buddies deserved a chance to stay together and live their best lives. Poncho and Lefty underwent castration and received the necessary care to make them fit and healthy for their journey to Colorado.

Now, here’s a fun fact to help you tell them apart: Poncho has a unique marking that resembles a brown poncho draped across his back. It’s like he’s wearing his own stylish outfit! Back in December 2022, sent to auction, Brooks faced some health challenges that made walking and even breathing a bit of a struggle. It wasn’t an easy time for our resilient friend, and his visible challenges put him at risk of being discarded and sent to a place nobody wants to talk about.

But fear not, because fate had brighter plans for Brooks. He was rescued by the incredible heroes at All Seated in a Barn, who showered him with care and attention, nursing him back to health. And now, Brooks has found his forever home here at Elkdog Ranch, where he’s on a mission to regain his optimal health and rediscover the joy of mounting up without a care in the world.

Brooks is a true trooper, impressing everyone he meets with his stoic nature and unwavering determination. He’s always eager to please and give his best, working hard to make progress on his journey towards feeling like a million bucks again. And let’s not forget, he has a heart as big as his appetite for treats, welcoming everyone who supports him.

It was here in Malibu California that Shiloh discovered his true calling as a therapy horse, bringing comfort, joy, and healing to those in need. And let’s not forget, Shiloh had a particular fondness for the abundance of carrots that came along with his new role.

In a selfless act of love, Shiloh’s person generously surrendered him, allowing him to embark on a new adventure in the breathtaking mountains of Colorado.
